More than 7000 years ago in Briitish Columbia’s beautiful Nazko Valley volcanic activity formed the Nazko Cone. The youngest and most easterly eruptive centre in the Anahim belt produced a deep carpet of black pumice (lapillo), a natural lightweight aggregate. Black pumice is a volcanic glass of low density and high surface porosity (60%). Its naturally jagged and uneven shape allows LavaGrip to inbed itself in snow and ice offering instant traction. Unlike sand, which is naturally round and will roll as forward pressure is applied, LavaGrip offers superior grip on wet or icy surfaces. Due to its low density, repeated heavy mechanical traffic will slowly break down LavaGrip and spread the product across a wider area while offering continued traction. LavaGrip’s dark black colour and porous structure absorbs and retains the sun’s heat, slowly melting the surrounding ice and snow. LavaGrip is an eco-friendly product, 100% natural, and chemically inert with a neutral pH of 6.8. This makes the end of season disposal safe and efficient as users can sweep any excess into gardens or lawns with no negative effects to the surrounding soil and vegetation.

HISTORY & TESTING OF LAVAGRIP

LavaGrip was originally branded under the name Anti-Slip and has been in use for over a decade. This product is recognized by ICBC and has been tested in conjunction with the BC Ministry of Transportation & Highways and local contractors throughout British Columbia. LavaGrip’s lightweight nature results in less windshield damage compared to the traditional traction or sanding methods and products. This means potentially millions of dollars in savings to provinces, insurance companies and the general population.

THE ORIGINAL “ANTI SLIP” FOR ICY CONDITIONS – LAVAGRIP VS. SALT, SALT BLENDS, CALCIUM CHLORIDE AND SAND FOR DE-ICING

EFFICIENCY

LavaGrip
  • 100% individual particles act as heat syncs with sunlight
  • Always an effective anti-slip agent, as particles wil not round out
Salt
  • Only useable in select temperature ranges.
  • Effective only to -6C degree.
  • Single use only, as product will dilute and become ineffective.
Salt Blends
  • Effective only to -6C degree.
  • Single use only, as product will dilute and become ineffective.
Calcium Chloride
  • Effective only to 10F (-12C) degree.
  • ONly can be used in dry weather.
  • Single use only, as product will dilute and become ineffective.
Sand
  • Most suppliers only use waste product or pit run sand that contains a high percentage of Sand silts and clays. This will affect product performance as it will become sticky, balls up, and actually reduces skid resistance.

USE RATE

LavaGrip
  • 100% effective residency time.
Salt, Salt Blends, Calcium Chloride:
  • Single use only, must re-apply with each use.
  • Hard on application equipment.
  • Requires special handling equipment.
  • Gloves required.
Sand
  • Will degrade as a lay down product as it rounds out.
  • User must look at the actual sieves for the products due to the variation of the bottom percentages of the “banana” curves wherein there will be a high percentage of silt and clay. This results in a reduced percentage of actual skid materials per ton of product laid down.

TRACKING

LavaGrip
  • Low ballistic values, will stay in water due to surface tension
  • Sharp edges will stick to floor mats
Salt
  • Permeates all structural elements, mats, clothing, footwear.
Salt Blends
  • Permeates all structural elements, mats, clothing, footwear.
Calcium Chloride
  • Permeates all structural elements, mats, clothing, footwear.
Sand
  • Will degrade due to high slit content
  • Silt will bind to shoes and clothing

ENVIRONMENTAL

Lavagrip
  • No negative effects
  • Can be used as a soil amendment and potting blend material
  • All natural product
  • Will act as a natural filtration product and will add to eco system enhancement
  • Can be used as aquarium sand.
Salt, Salt Blends, Calcium Chloride
  • Toxic
  • Unknown and variable source chemistry
  • Unknown heavy metal content
  • May be listed as a banned product by the government
  • Corrosive to concrete, pavements, vehicles, structures, clothing and footwear
  • Kills trees, plants, grass and aquatic life.
Sand
  • Siliceous content
  • Dust (air pollution) levels will increase as product breaks down
  • Adds to turbidity problems for storm drain outfalls
  • Will affect aquatic life as the oxygen levels will alter in the variable environment
